Carpet
What is important to consider?
When selecting carpet there are several important things to keep in
mind. You need to carefully look at the style of the carpet for your
interior design and the appropriateness to the environment in which it
will be used. In addition, the thickness, density and composition of
your pad will make a significant difference in the life and enjoyment
of your new floor.
Styles of carpet
Carpet today is produced in several different styles. Some of the
styles you will see are Berbers, Plush, Texture, Frieze, Commercial
and Indoor/Outdoor carpet. The yarns, also known as fibers, in carpet
are made of synthetic material such as nylon, polyester, polypropylene
and olefin; also some manufacturers utilize natural material such as
wool. These fibers are then tufted with a strong primary backing, most
often polypropylene olefin, but sometimes using other resilient
materials as backing. Some fibers are naturally more stain- and
wear-resistant then others. When selecting your carpet, be sure to ask
your floor consultant about the stain resistance of your selection.
The application method and stain inhibitors both will dictate the
effectiveness of the stain-resistance level of each individual carpet.

Selecting the right pad
Selecting the right carpet pad is as critical as selecting the right
carpet. The pad will have a direct influence on the longevity and
overall appearance of your new carpet. All carpet pads are not the
same and it is an important factor in your new flooring investment.
Carpet pad should be selected according to the manufacturers’
specifications for thickness and density. Using the wrong pad can void
carpet warranties, accelerate the wear of carpet and even lead to the
carpet buckling. Ask your floor consultant about the revolutionary
breakthrough in anti-microbial treated pad; now in stock!
For plush carpets, it is generally specified to use a 7/16”-thick pad
with a minimum of a 6-pound density. If using a foam pad, the density
requirements do not stay the same, however the thickness typically
does.
Berber carpets, or a thinner loop carpet, generally require a
thickness not to exceed 3/8” and must be very dense. Remember, these
styles of carpet are not made to feel as soft as a plush carpet.
Several types of carpet pad made today, are resistant to moisture such
as spills or minor pet accidents. They may also have an enzyme built
in to help mask odors and prevent mold and mildew growth. Some of
these products are hypo-allergenic and can also prevent dust mites.
The additional costs of these pads are well worth the investment;
especially when children are involved. Ask your consultant to
demonstrate the difference a high-quality pad will make.
