Ceramic Tile Floors
Ceramic tile can be traced back to ancient times and is still as
popular today as it was then. With infinite color, sizes, shapes and
finishes, it is the most versatile floor covering made today. It is an
excellent choice for those high traffic areas that may be exposed to
water, such as entranceways, bathrooms, kitchens and even basements.
Ceramic is easy to maintain and, being exceptionally durable, it is
well worth the investment. The following is a list of different types
of commonly available.
Porcelain
This type of ceramic is made with a fine mixture of clay and
minerals. This combination makes a denser material that is less
susceptible to chipping and fracturing. Porcelain is also “fired,” or
“baked,” at lower temperatures then regular ceramic tile. In most
cases, the color seen from the top of the product is throughout the
entire tile; this is known as "through body" porcelain.
Glazed Tile
This is the most commonly sold tile, primarily due to the price
and the large range of colors available. These tiles are coated with a
special glaze and then fired under tremendous heat to harden. The
color does not go all the way through the tile. These products are
most commonly used in bathroom wall and kitchen backsplash
installations. Unglazed Tile: Unglazed tile has no glazing or any
other coatings applied to the surface of the material. Because of
this, there is no finish to wear off and they do very well in high
traffic areas. The unglazed tile is less slippery then the glazed tile
and appropriate for areas that may have water occasionally sitting on
them.
Natural Stone
Natural stone such as granite, marble, slate and travertine are
naturally formed and no two tiles are alike. Granite is extremely
dense and extremely resistant to water which makes it ideal for
kitchens and bathrooms. Marble is beautiful but not quite as hard as
granite and usually is used in light traffic areas. Marble is often
found on backsplashes and counter tops. Natural stone tiles are
generally more expensive and have far fewer styles to choose from when
compared to ceramic tile. Nevertheless, there is nothing that looks as
good as a natural stone tile.
