At Your Door Floor Store's Flooring Tips
Caring for your Floors
Prevent damage from moving heavy objects
Never attempt to move heavy objects across any floor covering without
first protecting it; even carpet can sustain damage. If objects are
too heavy to carry, we recommend you move all furniture by putting
down a piece of plywood or heavy cardboard, then rolling the furniture
across the floor using a wide-tire hand truck. Special care is needed
for moving anything on a “hard surface” floor.
Keep doormats at all entry areas
Using a quality doormat at entry areas is a necessity. Door mats will
help alleviate sand, dirt, oil and especially asphalt sealer, from
being tracked into your home. The asphalt sealer can lead to the
yellowing of various vinyl floor coverings.
Keep the direct sunlight from your floors
Direct sunlight can lead to your beautiful floors fading and
discoloring. This is especially true with bright and/or dark colors.
Many species of hardwood will actually change color when affected by
direct sunlight. Keep those blinds and curtains closed whenever
possible. We also recommend rearranging furniture often, this will
allow sunlight and airflow to change the appearance of the floor in a
more uniform manner.
Protect floors from being damaged by furniture
Heavy furniture can indent or scratch most floor material; to prevent
this, always use felt or plastic floor pads on the feet of your
furniture. A wider floor protector will distribute weight better and
help prevent long term damage. Metal protectors are not recommended;
we suggest hard plastic or felt. See manufacturer’s maintenance
guidelines for further details.
Routinely clean and maintain your floors
The life of your carpet will be greatly extended by a simple weekly
vacuuming. Each time you vacuum, get into a routine of vacuuming
“north” to” south” one week and “east” to “west” the following . This
will help keep the fibers looking new and will not create a pattern by
repetitive vacuum motion. Hard surface floors have set maintenance
requirements and they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. We give
our clients the relevant manufacturer’s maintenance brochure with
every purchase. However, if you have not received one, or have further
questions, log onto the manufacturer’s website and they will have the
maintenance guidelines available for you to download. More questions?
